My Scarf

Add caption
Still doing lots of crochet and absolutely no sewing whatsoever in fact the sewing machine has been put away since my debacle with the Cynthia Rowley pattern way back at the end of June.
I thought it was about time I went a bit free style and create  my own item as such as I have made up lots of other peoples patterns recently so, as a bit of extra inspiration, I got out my copy of "Handbook of Crochet Stitches" * and gave it a thumb through.

Being lazy I thought it would be easier to crochet a scarf rather than a shawl so that is what I did.I took inspiration also from the "Arrows" stole that I crocheted a few weeks ago in that I started from a central point and worked the scarf in two halves so that the pattern flowed in two directions rather than just being in one direction only. Not that it would really matter I suppose either way would be just as nice.

Centre of scarf with Spaced Arches stitch pattern.
I  wanted to pick three stitch patterns that went from a more denser stitch placement in the central section and moving towards something a bit more lacy and open towards the very end.I think I just about did that.

Sultan Stitch in middle section.
The three pattern sections are separated by two rows of treble (double crochet in US terms) just to make the patterns stand out a bit more and all of the patterns only use the basic crochet stitches of chains, slip stitches, double crochet (single crochet) and trebles (double crochet).

Offset Scallops  third section with a simple shell border at the very bottom.
Again I went for the Rialto Lace by Debbie Bliss as it is quite nice and soft besides being good to work with.

awful photo...sorry.
I am quite pleased with how this turned out and I am looking forward to wearing it come the autumn...although by this mornings gloomy greyness  I don't think August is going to see much improvement in the weather again so I might be sporting it sooner than I think.

If anyone can think of a snappier name for this scarf other than "My Scarf" then I am open to suggestions!

  1. How about "More scarf success" for a title on your latest gorgeous piece of crochet?

I'm so wanting to have a go at something like this - maybe a good project when I'm away for a week later this month.

  2. That is just beautiful! I'm amazed, but not surprised you created that yourself.

  3. So lovely! I want you to name it something very unusual so it can become a pattern in its own right. Suggestions: "Espalier" "Moderne" "Grace" "Chesapeake"
    Seriously!

    1. I think "Espalier" would be good as it does have a certain splayed quality now it is finished but I must admit I am strangely drawn to "Chesapeake".In fact I am sure one of those women who wrote those Edwardian bodice ripping novels was called Espalier Chesapeake if I remember correctly!!
      Thanks for some lovely suggestions!.

  4. It's really lovely. I like the way you transitioned the patterns and the color is so sophisticated. I think you need to create a whole series based on bodice busters!

    1. What a fantastic idea! Think of the marketing potential! Not to mention, the hours of reading enjoyment you could write off to "design inspiration".

  6. :D It looks lovely and how cool that you designed it yourself!
Crossing my fingers that you won't have occasion to wear it in August, though...
